Genesis 32:21 “So Jacob’s gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.”

When God sends you back to a place to prosper there is something that should precede you. It’s your gifts. Your gifts make room for you and bring you into the presence of great men. Many times when we hear this scripture we think of our gifts we were born with but they are also inclusive of the gifts we were blessed with. We send our gifts ahead in anticipation of finding favor.

Jacob had been estranged from his brother Esau for 20 years. They left on bad terms. Jacob had just ran from his Father in law who had cheated him out of his wages for 20 years but God still allowed him to prosper. What a precarious place to be stuck in. He can’t stay where he’s been cheated and he’s afraid to go back to where he’s not wanted even though God told him to go back.

After Jacob prays to remind God that he’s the one that told him to go back he makes up his mind to send his brother Esau some gifts ahead of him coming.

  1. Before we go forward into a year of prosperity we have to make certain to send our gifts ahead. Jacob sent his brother a portion of the gifts he had been blessed with. At the beginning of the year we ought to give God the first fruits of our offering.
  2. Jacob sent his family over but he stayed back to wrestle with God. Before you go forward you’re going to have to wrestle with whom you really are. Nothing is going to change on the outside until you change on the inside. Jacob wrestled all night. He told God, “I’m not going to let you go until you bless me!” God changed his name from “trickster” to “I have struggled with God and have overcome!” You can’t go forward until you change!
  3. You have to reconcile with your brother. One of the most touching scenes is after Jacob sends all those gifts ahead to his brother in hopes that he will not attack him, is when Esau runs to Jacob and hugs his neck. They both start crying. If you are offering something at the altar and remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering and go be reconciled to your brother than come back and your offering will be accepted. Many of us have not benefited from what we gave because our relationships weren’t right. We hurt ourselves twice when we don’t give and when we don’t forgive. The word for means to “come in front of.” There is something that should precede your prosperity, which is your giving. There is something that should precede your giving that is you’re “forgiving!”

Dear God,

I’m ready to go forward but I know that I have to send my gifts ahead of me. I want to give you back a portion of what you’ve given me. If there is anybody I need to forgive I’m doing that this week. If there is anybody I need to ask forgiveness from I’m doing that today. I’m ready to go back to the place where you will prosper me. Thank you for allowing my gifts to make room for me.

In Jesus Name,
