Philippians 2:5

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus

Nothing would get me in trouble faster as a teen-ager than to have a bad attitude around my mother. I had to be very careful that my face did not betray me by showing my disdain towards a request that my mother gave me. She would often correct me by saying, ‘your little attitude is going to get you in trouble!’

Our attitude determines our altitude. We can only go as high as our attitude. Abad attitude is like a flat tire. If you do not change it you are not going anywhere. The dictionary defines attitude as a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior. You can say one thing with your mouth but your attitude comes out in how you act. It’s not what you say it’s what you do.

If we are going to live at the highest level of existence we must have the attitude of Christ. Jesus had a great attitude and so must we. A person with a good attitude does the following:

1. They don’t think too highly of themselves. Even though Jesus was the most high, he still made himself low. Everybody can’t handle power. I think that’s why many of the greats started out with nothing. God has to ground us with an appreciation of the little things before he can trust us with the big things.

2. They humble themselves. Jesus made himself nothing by taking the very form of a servant. Jesus was a servant-leader. He didn’t come to be served but to serve. A person with a sense of entitlement has a bad attitude. They show up thinking people owe them something. A person with a good attitude shows up seeking ways to serve even if they are the most important person in the room.

3. They work out their salvation with fear and trembling. A person with a good attitude realizes they are a work in progress. The apostle Paul said, “I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. Philippians 3:12

4. They do everything without complaining or arguing. A person with a good attitude doesn’t come with negativity. They are looking for the bright side of things. They don’t see problems they see challenges. As much as it depends on them they live in peace with everybody. They are peacemakers not peace breakers.

Dear God,

Help me to keep a good attitude. Give me the ability to change the atmosphere for the better instead of walking in bitter. Search me and if you find anything in me that would contribute to a bad attitude please remove it so that I can be a good example as a follower of yours on Jesus.

In his name,

Amen
