3487911_sLuke 4:1-2 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

It’s the beginning of a New Year and people are trying to do better by God and for themselves. It is a good time to hit the reset button to become your best self with God’s help. I believe that many of us are spirit led to seek out our best life and we can do it if we do not give into temptation.

The spirit led Jesus into the wilderness so that he could pray and fast. God was getting Jesus ready for his divine assignment. The problem is that when you are led by God to get you ready you can be sure that the devil will try to disrupt your discipline.

Each of us will be tempted by the devil to stop our efforts toward becoming our best selves in this New Year. If you can get past these three temptations I believe you will be better than you ever have this year!

  1. The temptation to eat what you don’t need to eat. Many of us are trying to eat healthier and fast to cleanse our temples. Diets help you lose weight but fasting helps your vision. Exercising cannot help a bad diet. When Jesus became hungry the devil tempted Jesus to use his power to turn stones into bread. Jesus said, “Man cannot live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God!” ┬áBeing obedient to God is more important than satisfying the cravings of our stomach.
  2. Worshipping the wrong things. Many of us start the New Year out right by coming to church on the first Sunday but stop coming later in the year because we bow down to other gods. Satan told Jesus to worship him and he would give him authority. Satan can’t give Jesus what he already has and neither can he do that for us. We should worship the Lord God and him only. We should commit to attending worship on a weekly basis. We should seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to us.
  3. The temptation to participate in risky behavior. The devil tempted Jesus to throw himself off the highest point in Jerusalem. This temptation is all about making it to the top and then doing something stupid hoping God catches you. We shouldn’t put God’s grace to the test. We need to exercise good judgment. The higher you go the more careful you have to be.

This is your year to get your life back together. Don’t let the devil knock you off course in the next 40 days. Stay on track with your eating, worship, and decision-making. Come out of your time of testing full of the Holy Spirit. But know this. The devil will be back later this year to test you again. Be ready in season and out of season.

Dear God,

Thank you for another year! Strengthen me so that I can pass my test and not fall for the Devils tricks. Give me a good plan for healthy eating and exercise. Help me to worship you in spirit and in truth on a weekly basis. Don’t let me make any bad decisions that would jeopardize my position. Fill me with your Holy Spirit this year!

In Jesus Name,
