Matthew 12:46, 48 While he was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers showed up. They were outside trying to get a message to him. Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are out here, wanting to speak with you.” Jesus didn’t respond directly, but said, “Who do you think my mother and brothers are?” He then stretched out his hand toward hi…s disciples. “Look closely. These are my mother and brothers. Obedience is thicker than blood. The person who obeys my heavenly Father’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

There is a commercial I absolutely love. It is the Sprint Family plan. The little boy with the deep southern drawl asks his mother, “Can Kevin Durant be a part of our Framily?” KD tells the little boy, “I can’t be a part of your Framily because you’re dreaming then he takes off in the air with rocket boosters in the bottom of his tennis shoes.

Many of us have awakened to the reality that everybody we thought were our family and friends are not really committed to us as we thought. Our plans are not his plans. The older I get the more I realize my “Framily” plan is much smaller than I assumed. You would think that blood would automatically include people in your Framily plan. You would think that people you have know for years would be a part of this plan. No! This plan is by invitation only.

Jesus was told that his mother and brothers wanted him to come outside while he was busy with ministry. Jesus pointed at his disciples, the people who had caught his vision, the people who were investing in fulfilling his vision and he said, “these are the people in my “Framily!” Those who are obedient are more important than those who are my blood.

Sometimes the people who should be the closest to you are the ones who know you the least. Just because people have known you a long time doesn’t mean they are loyal to you. Those that do the will of my Father are my Framily.

Here’s how you get on my Framily plan:

1. You have to have a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Ephesians 2:19

2. You have to be loyal. Friends and family talk to each other not about each other. I don’t need anybody on my Framily plan using up my minutes then betraying me when you hang up. Miss me with that.

3. You have to be obedient to God’s will. Jesus had to rebuke Peter because he wanted the things of men and not the things of God. Real friends and family respect the will of God for your life and will not do anything that is against God’s best for you.

4. You can’t be stealing from me. Judas was part of Jesus Framily but he stole from the offering and eventually sold Jesus out. He had a chance to make it right though. Jesus told Judas the night he was going to betray him, “Friend what you do, do it quickly!” Once thieves are exposed it’s time for them get off my plan!

5. You have to be a part of the solution not the problem. Jesus was trying to heal people when his family demanded he quit ministering to his Framily. Framily members help your plan other people drain your minutes, betray your trust, and leave you hanging on the cross.

The good news is that God will give you clarity on who is a part of your Framily. The good news is that even those who let you down can be restored like Peter. The good news is that even your relatives can come back to their senses and meet you around the cross like Mary. The good news is that you don’t have to waste time looking for Judas because he’s always exposed and usually hangs himself.

Dear God,

Show me who my real Framily is. I don’t have another minute to waste as I try to fulfill the plan you have for my life. Each and every day is precious to me. I don’t have any time to waste on people who don’t know me or love me. Thank you for giving real Framily members who love and cherish me. Thank you for my 3 who go with me into tough situations. Thank you for the 12 who you’ve given me to walk with me. Thank you for the 1 who died for me and loves me more than all.

In his name I pray!

Amen
