“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8 NIV

It’s one thing to be busy and another thing to be productive. Some people are just busybodies! They have an appearance that they are doing something significant but in actuality they are just doing a lot of moving but not being productive.

The apostle Peter tells the early followers of Christ that if they want to be effective and productive he or she had to posses certain qualities. We don’t have all these qualities when we first start our faith journey but God expects us to add on!

  1. Add to your faith goodness. Our faith in God is the foundation for everything else. Without faith it is impossible to please God. But faith without works is dead! If we are going to be effective we have to add goodness to that.
  2. Add to goodness knowledge. As we grow into mature disciples we have to add knowledge. We must study to show ourselves approved. At our church we encourage every member to get in a connect group so they can study the word of God and have some accountability.
  3. Add to knowledge self control. Proverbs 25:28 states that a man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls. The more mature we get the more self control we need to exhibit.
  4. Add to self control perseverance. This is the ability not to give up as you go through adversity. The only way we can be effective and productive is to press through when we feel like quitting.
  5. Add to perseverance godliness. There’s an old statement that says, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Our character should match God’s character. We know who God is by how Jesus carried himself. The bottom line here is to treat people like you would want to be treated.
  6. Add to godliness mutual affection. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. We must have healthy relationships to be productive and effective. How you interact with others shows how much God you have in you.
  7. Add to mutual affection love. If we have the ability to do great things in the name of God but don’t have love we have done nothing! Love is the glue that holds all these qualities together. God is love and if we abide in him we have to be a loving people. You can’t be hateful and be effective. The people who are most productive and effective are the people who know how to love and honor people.

Dear God,

Help me to be effective today! I don’t want to be a busybody. I want to be productive. Whatever quality that I’m lacking in add to my personality today. Don’t let me excuse any behavior in me that doesn’t match you. Keep adding to me until I reach the full measure of maturity as expressed in Christ Jesus!
