loveRevelation 2:3-5 “You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. Yet there is one thing wrong; you don’t love me as at first! Think about those times of your first love how different now! And turn back to me again and work as you did before; or else I will come and remove your candlestick from its place among the churches.

We can all remember our first love. Your heart was so full of life. All you thought about was that person. You would talk for hours and it felt like minutes. It’s very rare that people stay with their first love but even when they do, there’s still a danger that your love can fade.

Do you remember when you first fell in love with God? I do! I was on fire for the Lord. It was in college. The Holy Spirit took control of my life and God was my life! I couldn’t stop talking about him. My family thought I was crazy. My friends didn’t understand.

Years later I still love God but I got to admit that I drifted from my intensity. I got busy doing stuff for him that I forgot to do stuff with him. I’ve taken a lot of hits in ministry and it caused my heart to grow a little cold. This is not God’s fault. It’s mine. I’ve got to get back to that place of intensity but how?

God tells the church in Ephesus that he is proud of them for going through trials and not quitting. They took some hits and didn’t quit. But they forgot something. They fell out of love with God.

  1. Remember the height from which you have fallen. Compare where you are now in your spiritual walk to where you were when you first started following God. How far have you drifted? Do you pray like you used to? Do you come to church like you used to? Do you give like you used to? Why did you stop loving God and his people?
  1. Repent or turn back to God again. It’s not too late to go back to God. This might be a turning point in your life so you can go back to God. He’s using this situation in your life to get you back.
  1. Repeat the good things you did at first. There are some spiritual disciplines you need to revisit like prayer, witnessing, serving in ministry, regular church attendance, giving, fasting, missions, reading scripture and just being available for God to use.
  1. Relinquish your light. If we don’t remember, repent, or repeat God will remove our lamp. What does that mean? The light represents God’s favor and the power of his spirit operating in our lives. It could also mean our life. God could cut short our life if we don’t get back to being where we are supposed to be.

Dear God I love you! I just allowed too many distractions to pull me away. I want to be totally consumed by your spirit again. You have been too good to me for me to be so distant and inconsistent. Today I choose to walk closer to you and to do the things I did at first. Please don’t take my light away.

In Jesus name I pray!
