Mark 14:4-5 Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked. “It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.

It’s amazing how other people have so much to say about how you spend your money. As Bobby Brown reminded his friends in the song, “It’s my prerogative” ‘I made this money…you didn’t! Right Ted?!” Nothing is more irritating when people criticize you for being generous. I think what gets people talking the most is when you give your money to Jesus.

One day Jesus came to the house of a religious leader to have dinner. A woman who had been healed by Jesus discovered that he would be eating there. She came in and broke open some fragrant oil that was worth a years wage. She poured the whole bottle on Jesus.

The crowd was indignant! Why would this woman waste all this expensive perfume on this man Jesus?! It’s understandable that people who didn’t have any understanding of who God was would be so irate but this group of people knew God. This should have been a “No HATE Zone…They Know Better!”

The sad thing is they had head knowledge but no heart knowledge. They were religious but they had no relationship with Jesus. They really didn’t know who he was. Even Jesus’ financial secretary Judas got mad and agreed with the people there to sell Jesus out for 30 pieces of silver because he was mad that this woman wasted money on Jesus.

Here’s the truth, you can’t waste money on Jesus. What do I mean?

  1. They argued that this money could have been given to the poor. Judas was really mad because he was stealing the money. Jesus said, “you can and (should) help the poor anytime. Jesus said, “Whenever you do unto the least of these you do unto me.” This woman anointed Jesus for his burial. Anytime you help fulfill Jesus’ mission it is not a waste.
  1. Whatever you pour out on Jesus will not be forgotten. Jesus said what that woman did for him would never be forgotten. Only what you do for Christ will last.
  1. Whatever you give shall be given back to you. Pressed down shaken together. Men will pour back into your bosom what you pour on Jesus.

Stop trying to explain to religious people why you give money to the church. They will not understand why you tithe. Religious people will think that giving Jesus left overs will suffice but people who really know Jesus realize that he loves a generous giver and what you give him will never be wasted!

Dear God,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to pour out my best for you. I’ve wasted too much money on people and things that never gave back anything to me. You gave your life for me and for your church. The least I could do is to honor you by giving my best from my first fruits. Today I open my fragrant oil and I will pour out what you gave me the ability to get. My best belongs to you.

In Jesus Name,
