James 4:1-3 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

How can you just leave me standing

Alone in a world that’s so cold?

Maybe I’m just too demanding

Maybe I’m just like my father, too bold

Maybe you’re just like my mother

She’s never satisfied

Why do we scream at each other?

This is what it sounds like when the doves cry

Doves are suppose to be peaceful creatures but Prince Rodgers Nelson imagined them crying. He used the analogy of Doves crying to describe what it was like for he and his lover to argue, fuss, and fight.

James asked why do we argue, fuss, and fight? He said it was because of the desires within us. We want something contrary to what God wants for us. Prince acknowledged that maybe he was too demanding like his Father and his companion was never satisfied like his mother. There are two issues that affect us within: our desires and our genetic proclivities.

The war we feel within has been handed down from generation to generation and until we fix what’s inside we cannot control what happens on the outside unless we ask.

I thought the problem was asking? No the problem is that we ask

  1. The wrong way. Prince said he was too demanding. We must be careful not to have a spirit of entitlement. Just because we ask doesn’t mean people are obligated to respond. God is the one that we should ask and expect a favorable response when we ask right.
  1. The wrong time. When it comes to asking people for what we want timing has to be taken into consideration. You might have the right request but the wrong time. This can cause a disagreement. When it comes to God we can ask anytime. He never sleeps and he never slumbers.
  1. The wrong motive. When we ask with the wrong motives our requests can go unheeded. Prince said maybe you’re just like my mother you’re never satisfied. When pleasure is an end in itself you will never be satisfied. Asking for something with no end in sight can lead to arguments and frustration.

Ask the right way. Seek the right thing the right way. Knock at the right time and God will supply all your NEEDS according to his riches in glory.

Dear God,

Help me to avoid needless arguments by making sure my motives are right. Help me to be considerate of others even as I seek out what is needed in my own life. Thank you for giving me peace which surpasses all human understanding especially when my cry for help is misunderstood.

In Jesus Name,
