Romans 1:28 So it was that when they gave God up and would not even acknowledge him, God gave them up to doing everything their evil minds could think of.

It’s really confusing being a human being these days. Somebody has reversed all the price tags. That which used to be of value is now cheap and that which used to be cheap holds great value. Marriage has been exchanged for relationships of convenience. Our sexuality is a roll of the dice and based on who we feel like being instead of who we were created to be. Family time has been exchanged with an obsession with technology. The things that used to matter don’t seem to matter anymore. People do whatever seems to come up in their minds to do. What happened?

The writer of Romans seems to think that people made an exchange. Somebody many years ago switched the price tags. Humans exchanged the truth of God for a lie. In first century Rome there was much debauchery. People did whatever they wanted to. It was one of the most violent cities in the world. Sex slaves and sexual perversion, gladiators who participated in blood sport, persecution of Christians, poor oppressed by the rich. What caused all of this?

1. They decided that believing in God was foolish. We are living in a time where the “enlightened” are deciding that God is a forgone necessity. We have become our own gods. The problem with this is we come to the end of ourselves real quick and there is nothing that transcends our limitedness. There is no higher consciousness. There is no one bigger than us compelling us to higher standards. How do we deliver ourselves when we run out of resources?

2.They did not retain the knowledge of God. The Psalmist said, “I have hidden God’s word in my heart so that I might not sin against him.” God’s word gives us a higher standard to live by;  if there are no rules, anything goes. Imagine a city with no laws. Chaos! Imagine your life with no direction from a higher power. Chaos.

3.  They gave up on God so God gave them up to their own mind. Have you ever tried to explain something to a stubborn child, until finally you just let them do it their way? How’d that work out? It’s the same way with us and God. At some point, when we keep rebelling against God, he just lets us do it our way. There is a way that seems right to humans but in the end leads to death. The worst thing God could do is to leave us to our own thought process.

When God gives us over to depraved minds we become evil, corrupt, and perverted. If we are going to change the course of this crazy world somebody has got to switch the price tags and get back to the truth of God. If my people who are called by “God’s” name will humble themselves and turn from their wicked ways then God would hear from heaven and heal the land. We have got to turn back to God. It’s crazy out here!

Dear God,

We messed up by turning our backs on you. We messed up by kicking you out of our homes and our school. We messed up by allowing religious people to misrepresent you. We messed up by allowing intellectuals make us think that believing in you was foolish. We messed up when we chose darkness over light. Get us back into your presence so we can know the difference between right and wrong. Get us back into your presence so we can know Justice. Get us back into your presence so that we can love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Lord please take us back so we can go forward.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
