2 Corinthians 1:9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

Has there ever been a time where you felt overwhelmed? There have been times in all our lives where we have been up against something that we did not have the resources to overcome. Every now and then you will go into a season where you can’t talk your way out, buy your way out, or work your way out. This place feels like death.

Jesus was in that place when he was in the Garden of Gethsemane praying to God about his appointment with the executioner on the cross. Jesus prayed to God to let this appointment be canceled. He was afraid and exhausted but he knew that our souls were in jeapordy so he said, “not my will but your will be done!” Jesus chose to die for us.

The reason we go to these places, where we are in situations beyond our ability, is that God is trying to draw you closer to him.

The apostle Paul said that he was often in places where he felt the sentence of death. He was in over his head and that was the place where he connected with God the most!

1. We felt we had received the sentence of death. There will be times where it feels like you have reached a dead end. Your resources have taken you as far as you can go. The good news is that God will meet you there. This is your turning point. When you are down to nothing God is up to something.

2.  This happened so that we would not rely on ourselves. At some point in your life you should come to the realization that ‘I can’t do this without God!’ At some point you have to run to the end of yourself.

3.  We have to rely on God, who raises from the dead. Easter is the celebration of God raising JESUS from the dead. If he can do that for Jesus, he can also do it for us. No matter what your situation looks like you can rely on God. Lean not to your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.

Dear God,

Thank you for getting me out of this place of self-reliance. I can’t make it without you. I can’t even rely on people. Only you are consistent enough to trust. You have never left me. You have never failed me. I will wait on you and I know you can deliver me. Thank you God for being reliable when I find myself in a dead end. Thank you for raising JESUS from the dead and making a way of escape for me.

In Jesus Name,
