Romans 1:28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not be done.
In his book, FutureCast, how todays trends shape tomorrows future, George Barna asks, “are we seeking a place where anything goes or where there are agreed-upon limitations to what is acceptable?”
It appears that a growing contingent of young adults is bent on moving toward a yet to be determined framework of alternative values in which personal choice is the pivotal value.
- We are living in a world that is becoming more and more uncivil. America has been recognized as one of the rudest countries in amongst developed countries. What happened? We haven’t retained the knowledge of God. At his basic understanding God is love. We have let God of our knowledge of God. We generally base our moral choices on feelings rather than on intellect or an absolute moral standard. When the enemy comes in like a flood our God will raise a standard against him. When we lose the knowledge of God we lose the standard. What is our standard of morality?
- God gave them over to a depraved mind, or a morally corrupt mind. Sigmund Freud would say your “Id” is the unorganized part of the personality that contains a humans basic, instinctual drives. Id is the source of our bodily needs, wants, desires, and impulses, particularly our sexual and aggressive drives. The Id contains the libido which is the primary source of instinctual force that is unresponsive to the demands of reality. The Apostle Paul would call this the flesh and he would tell us if we do not want to be depraved we must be led by the Holy Spirit or the Super Ego. The ego seeks to please the Id’s drive in realistic ways that will benefit in the long term rather than bring grief. The Super Ego represents our parental influence, spiritual goals, or conscience. Have you ever seen someone and said, “They don’t have a conscience!” What did you mean?
- We do what should not be done. When we don’t retain the knowledge of God and give in to our instinctual nature we end up doing what should be done and we become what we would not want to become. The result is a country that nobody wants to live in as exemplified in verses 29-31 If you don’t like what’s happening in our country, church, or your house, the resistance starts by your living a firm, persuasive, and consistent Christian life.
Please don’t’ turn me over to my “Id” but instead lead me to a place that is higher than I. Help me to come up higher to let go of my youthful mantle in exchange for a more mature mantle which will lead me to a place where morality is established and the enemy is defeated.
In Jesus Name,
