The outcome of any situation has a great deal to do with your mindset. If you go in thinking that you are defeated then chances are you lost before you even got started. There’s a new commercial by Bose advertising their new headphones. They show football players like JJ Watt and Russell Wilson sitting in contemplation while their favorite recording artists stands in front of them motivating them. It is a picture of their mindset. Who is in your head edging you on? What is your mind set for your future? Who or what is leading you in your daily pursuits? Whatever your mindset is will determine your outcome.

The apostle Paul spent an extensive amount of time in Romans talking about the importance of being led by the spirit. He talked about the conflict that exists between the Holy Spirit and our flesh. Our flesh represents our ID, what Sigmund Freud would call our animalistic impulse. Whatever we have our mind set on determines how we will respond.

  1. Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires. I was reading a book on spiritual leadership and the author was stressing the importance of leaders in the church being filled with the Holy Spirit. The filling is not a pouring in but a possession of mind by God’s Spirit. Without that control there is no distinction in terms of how we operate from people in the world. Churches will become cutthroat like corporate America if it’s leaders have a carnal mindset.
  2. Those who live in accordance with the spirit have their minds set on what the spirit desires. There is a predetermined outcome that has for our lives and our organizations but they are only carried out when we are in sync with his spirit. Whenever I sync my iPhone with my computer I transfer the information from one device to another. Sometimes I miss updates when I don’t sync up. I’m operating on old information. Everyday we need to sync up to God not just for new information but also for power!
  3. The mind set on the flesh leads to death but the mind set on the spirit leads to life. The paradox in this is that something has to die in order for something to live. We must determine today what our mindsets will be. Will it be life or death? Who’s in your head?

Dear God,

I choose life today. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. Help me to make decisions that are influenced by your Holy Spirit and not my ego. Protect me against myself. Take me to a higher plane of consciousness so that I will not gratify my base desires that keep me in basement living. Take me higher! My mind is set on your will not mine. Use me today to lead others and myself to the more noble ways of living.

In Jesus Name,
