Job 35:3 Job 36:11-12 “Yet you ask him, ‘What profit is it to me, and what do I gain by not sinning?’ If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment. But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge.

What’s the big deal? What’s up with all the rules? Does God really care about what I do with my body? We live in a time of moral ambiguity. The new mantra of life is that what is good is whatever makes you feel good and what is bad is getting caught.

Sin has almost disappeared out of our culture. Dr. Martin Luther King profoundly talked about this decades ago when he said, “The other thing is that we have adopted a sort of a pragmatic test for right and wrong—whatever works is right. If it works, it’s all right. Nothing is wrong but that which does not work. If you don’t get caught, it’s right. [laughter] That’s the attitude, isn’t it? It’s all right to disobey the Ten Commandments, but just don’t disobey the eleventh, “Thou shall not get caught.”

The word Sin means to miss the mark. It’s an archery term meaning how far you are from the target. Everyday we should aim to hit God’s target of righteousness knowing that in our humanity we will fall short. What does it profit us not to sin?

  1. When our ways are pleasing to God he will give us the desires of our hearts. Proverbs 16:7
  1. They will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and contentment. Prosperity is more than money. It is good health and peace of mind. God keeps you when you live right.
  1. You avoid an untimely death and eternal separation from God. God gives us his laws for our own protection. They are borders to protect us from going over the edge.
  1. It is by grace that we are saved but we still need to know God’s law. What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” Romans 7:7

Dear God,

Help me to take heed to your word. Enable me to keep your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. What does it profit a man to be slick and gain the world but mess around and lose his soul in the end? It’s more profitable for me to live Holy, deny myself daily, take up my cross and follow you. Lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil.

 In Jesus Name,

 Amen
