“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:23-25 NLT

I’ve seen black, white, Latino, Asian, Protestant, catholic, Jew, and gentile upset over this election. Our young people from all ethnic backgrounds are marching in protests. People are afraid and grieving. You cannot sow discord and reap unity. We lost something Tuesday night.

We also gained something. We regained consciousness! We realize more than ever that if we are going to make it through the next for years we are going to need the power of God and the power of the people.

There three things you should do after this disappointing election.

  1. Let us hold firmly to Hope we have in God! He can be trusted! I’m not putting my trust in a man. God is not a man that he would lie! We have come this far by faith. God heard the cry of his children as slaves in Egypt and again in America. God will see us through. Don’t lose your faith; use your faith!
  2. Let us think of ways to motivate each other towards acts of love and good deeds. As Dr. King said, “we must overcome their capacity to do evil with our capacity to love!” Non-violent protest, mentoring young children, volunteering for team read, push for criminal justice reform, feed the hungry, push for legislation to end poverty.
  3. Come back to church! When we were oppressed as a people from slavery to Jim Crow the black church was the hub for social justice. From hush harbors during slavery to hand painting signs at Clayborn Temple in Memphis, the church played a central role in our liberation. We have got to come back together and meet on a regular bases to worship God, love one another, and come up with a plan of engagement for social justice. Micah 6:8 God has told you what he wants, and this is all it is: to be fair, just, merciful, and to walk humbly with your God.

Don’t give up on God because he won’t give up on you. This is a test to see if we will trust God or continue to turn away from God. If we ever needed the Lord before we sure do need him now!

Dear God,

Help us to come back to you and come back together. Forgive us for electing a leader that does not reflect your character at all. Our young people are angry, the poor are afraid, and foreigners are anxious. We are the divided states of America! Father help your children! Don’t turn us over to ourselves. Raise up a remnant of people who reflect your love and Unite the Red States and Blue States but more than that Unite the people of God before it’s too late!
In Jesus name,

Amen
