“Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work. They received from Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to carry out the work of constructing the sanctuary. And the people continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning.”
Exodus 36:2-3 NIV

In the Amish community the people come together to help each other to raise barns. A barn is a necessity for successful farming but the problem is that the expense of doing so is too much for one family. So everybody in the community pitches in with their skills and resources to help raise a barn for each family.

A church is necessary for bringing in the harvest of lost souls into God’s Kingdom. The costs of doing the work of ministry, serving children, discipling, community development, worship, outreach are often more than one family to handle but when we come together we can raise up a church that can be a blessing to the community.

Moses enlisted the help of every skilled person in his newly formed community to raise the tabernacle of the Lord. He also asked them to donate materials. The beautiful part of this text is that the people bought so much material every day that Moses had to tell them to stop bringing stuff!!

I only wish we had that problem today. In today’s church philanthropy has gone down every year even as the needs of the community have gone up. With this new tax bill social programs are being cut and the weight of taking care of the poor falls back on the churches. But the double edged sword of this tax cut for the rich is that they have also cut charitable deductions to churches so that takes giving down even more.

The government is not going to help the poor or the church. Church members are going to have to help the poor and help the church. But how?

  1. Those who are skilled should volunteer their services to the church. There are so many repairs that are needed in our church and we could use the help of skilled people. New Direction has an app. At the bottom of the app it says “MORE.”  When you click on it, it says “SKILLS.” There is a place where you can list your skill so that you can help us do the work. There is a church near you wherever you are that could use your skillset. So many people have so much to say about what the church ain’t doing but you can’t change anything from the outside looking in. Go in and volunteer your skills!
  2. Your gifts. The only way the skilled workers were able to repair or build the tabernacle was with the gifts that the people brought in. They brought in gold, ropes, leather, gems, clasps, etc. they brought in so much Moses had to ask them to stop! Also under the “MORE” where it says, “Vision Partner” where you can give your resources to help the work.

You may not be a member of New Direction but you could help your church with your skills and resources. We already have enough people who are tearing down the church talking bad about pastors and churches, but if you see a church that is making a difference in the community, help build up that church with your resources and your skills. One day you will need the help of the community to help raise your barn.

Dear God,

You see the work that we are doing in the community. We need your help God. The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. We are praying to you God to send more workers and to send more resources. God help us to save lost souls, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, visit those that are in prison, preach good news to the poor, and be a safe house for those looking for refuge. I pray that those who need these things will be able to find it in every house of God across the world and that the people of God would continue to build up your house and not tear it down with their mouths and their hands.

In Jesus’ Name,
