Exodus 1:12 But the more the Egyptians oppressed them, the more the Israelites multiplied and spread, and the more alarmed the Egyptians became.

It was the infamous comedian Robin Harris who made these words famous, “We are Bae Bae’s kids! We don’t die we multiply!” He was speaking about a character in his bit about a single woman he was dating and her kids were notoriously resilient. His colorful way of looking at her kids was really a prophetic picture of us as a people. No matter what atrocities we’ve been through be it slavery, The Great Depression, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Struggle, the recession we don’t die we multiply!

We are like the children of Israel in Egypt. They survived a famine thanks to their patriarch Joseph. After he died there came a Pharaoh that “knew not Joseph.” The Hebrews multiplied and their growth intimidated the Egyptians. They can up with a plan to make slaves of them and oppress them with hard labor but the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread!

Some of the most oppressed minorities in this country have grown and spread. This theological formula still holds true that the more you are oppressed as a child of God the more he multiplies you. The rap group Public Enemy was right, “It takes a nation of Millions to hold us back!”

1. The more they were oppressed. The adversity that you go through is really the stimulus for your growth. James 1:2-4 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

2. The more they multiplied. God will use adversity to cause you to multiply. That which does not kill you makes you stronger. God wants each of us to become multipliers. God doesn’t want you to have apples this year he wants you to become an apple tree. This is the year that you produce more fruit for God. You’ve been through enough now it’s time to multiply. Go and make Disciples!

3. The more they oppressed them the more they multiplied and spread! It’s time for you to take over new territory. When we’ve been oppressed and people have done us wrong for too long we have to pray the prayer of Jabez…1 Chronicles 4:10 He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!” And God granted him his request.

This is the year of multiplication and expansion for those of you who have been oppressed. God has heard your cry and your prayers. Get ready to spread out to the left and to the right! Multiply!

Dear God,

Thank you for not allowing our enemies to kill our seed. You have multiplied our seed in the land of our oppression. We have overcome! We are in position this year for you to multiply our seed and spread out our success. Thank you for not allowing me to die while I was being oppressed. I’m free no more chains are holding me. This is the year that I multiply!

In Jesus Name,
