2 John 1:4-6 “It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.”
Whenever there has been any kind of significant social change there has always been people walking together. From the young people in Soweto to the people in Selma to the people in St. Louis we have walked together for change. This Sunday at 2pm in Memphis will be no different. We have to walk together to end violence in our community.
The Apostle John wrote to a church that was under siege by false teachers who were weakening the churches witness. John commends them for their walk. I believe that this Sunday when churches all over the Mid-South dress in all white on Sunday then gather after church at City Hall at 2pm and walk together to the Civil Rights Museum that the city will see the Bride of Christ and know that change is coming to this city.
Why are we walking?
- We are walking for truth. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free!” Truth is not just facts but the Truth is a person. Jesus said, “I am the way, the Truth, and the Life.” When we know Jesus and walk with him the truth shall set us free. When it comes to the truth. Today there is no black or white just 59 shades of Gray. It’s time for Christians to walk in Truth and bring light to the Gray areas of injustice.
- We need to walk in obedience to God’s commands. If we had to narrow down the scope of God’s commands we could use Micah 6:8 O people, the LORD has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do Justice or what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
- Walk in Love. Dr. King said that we must overcome evil with our capacity to love. When we walk together this Sunday at 2pm we are showing our city that we love each other. When we stand for what is right we are showing the world that we love each other. How can two walk together unless they agree? How can we truly understand each other unless we walk together?
Jesus two greatest commandments were that we Love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our mind, with all your soul, and with all your strength and the second is just as important; Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
Now walk it out!
Thank you for challenging us to walk out our faith. It’s not enough to say we love you and each other without being willing to walk it out. Even Jesus challenged us to walk further with our enemies. He said, “If they compel you to walk one mile, walk with them two!” Give us strength Lord to walk out in love so we can transform our communities. Help us to walk in truth amongst people who are living lies. Help us to walk in obedience to your commands so people will know there is another way that leads to abundant life. Help us to walk in love in a world that is so hateful. Most of all help us to walk together; red, yellow, black, and white, because we are all precious in your sight.
In Jesus Name,
