“This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”
Romans 13:11 NLT
#StayWoke is a more than a hashtag, it’s become a movement. It’s a consciousness concerning the injustices prevalent in our nation and world. It’s being aware of not only the problem, but also our responsibility to correct the problem.
The assumption is that people are already awake. In the old movie, “Awakenings” Robert Deniro plays a man who’s been in a coma-like state for years before a doctor played by Robin Williams comes up with a cure to awaken him. Miraculously, he comes back to consciousness and has so much energy and zeal, but it is short-lived because the medicine cannot sustain him and he slowly drifts back into a comatose state.
Many of us were awakened by our Doctor, Jesus. When we accepted Jesus his Holy Spirit regenerated our hearts and minds so that we had the ability to love and see injustice. Prior to that we were so self-absorbed that we were not concerned about our neighbor. If God has not awakened you by changing your inward disposition, there is no way for you to stay awake. The only person you care about is yourself. But even that is questionable by the things you allow to take place in your life.
Wake up! Time is winding up. We only have so much time left in this crazy world before we drift into the long sleep of death. To be spiritually woke means that we…
- Remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes and put on the shining armor of right living (Romans 13:12). When you are woke your focus is on right living. You can’t make things right if you’re not living right.
- Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy (Romans 13:13). Justice and righteousness are inseparable. Righteousness comes from being in relationship with Jesus Christ and being an active member of the body of Christ.
- Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires (Romans 13:14). To be woke means you are dedicating your new consciousness to living life the way Christ wants you to live. Not indulging in evil desires.
Time is winding up and we must do the work of him who sent us while it is day. For when night (death) comes no one will be able to work. For us who do the work of Christ which is found in Luke 4:18-19, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor (economic justice). He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released (criminal justice reform), that the blind will see (universal healthcare), that the oppressed will be set free (immigration reform), and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”
It’s time to wake up and do the work!
Thank you for waking me up. Strengthen the work of my hands. Help me to be faithful and fight the good fight, & finish my race so that when it is all over I can hear you say, “Well done my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things. Now come on up and I will make you ruler over many.”
In Jesus’ Name!
