“You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.” Revelation 2:3-5 NIV

We are at the end of another year! Thank God we made it. There were times where it felt like we weren’t going to get to the end of this but God saw us through it.

I think that God is so proud of us but he also wants us to step it up right here at the end. Here are three things God tells the church in Ephesus.

  1. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. First of all God commends them for making it through hardships other people would have given up in. It’s a miracle you even made it through the stuff you went through this year. Let’s celebrate that! Going through was hard and as a result it took something out of you that you have to recognize.
  2. You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! The things you went through took some of your passion for Jesus and his church away from you. You were fired up about the things of God when you first gave your life to Christ then life happened. You lost your fire. It died down. Now it’s time to stir up the flames of the Holy Ghost that are still flickering in you! Consider how far you’ve fallen. Look at your depth chart. Do you love God as deep as you used to? Do you give as much as you used to? Have you fallen off?
  3. Repent and do the things you did at first. Repent means that you discover that you are going the wrong direction and you make a U-Turn and go back in the right direction. There were some spiritual disciplines that you used to do like; prayer, fasting, serving, giving, witnessing, missions and volunteering. When you did these things your life had more meaning. You have to repeat these things.

If we don’t repent and repeat God will remove our light.

Recently at church the elders lit the candles on the communion table. Only one lit up, the other one would not light because the wick was too short to hold a flame. It had burned out. We had one candle left. It bothered me.

God spoke to me and said, “Replace that candle before the one you got left also burns out!” We have too many burned out Christians in church that are causing other saints to work overtime to compensate for their lack of passion. If you are burned out ask God to renew the right spirit in you. If you have been sitting idle watching people smolder out get in there and let your light shine! We need you at the table.

Dear God,

Strengthen my witness. You are my first love. I’m sorry for letting life erode my passion for serving you. I’ve got my second wind and I’m ready to get back in the game! Fan into flames your precious Holy Spirit so that my flames may leap higher in 2018. This little light of mine I’m going to let shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
