In that room were a gold incense altar and a wooden chest called the Ark of the Covenant, which was covered with gold on all sides. Inside the Ark were a gold jar containing manna, Aaron’s staff that sprouted leaves, and the stone tablets of the covenant.” Hebrews 9:4 NLT

As we prepare to send another son off to college, my wife has already been talking about a Hope Chest for our son Jordan. She wants to start preparing for his next chapter as a college student by storing away items he will need for his dorm; things like an iron, bedding, motivational placards, etc.

If we were to put together a “Hope” Chest for our next place of promotion what would be in it? A wedding dress? A business suit? A passport? Graduate school application?

As believers we need a “Hope” Chest that we keep three things to ensure that we are prepared for the next level in our lives.

The writer of Hebrews mentioned the Ark of the Covenant, which was a wooden Chest that the children of Israel carried around on their way to the Promised Land. It represented the Presence of God. They never went out to battle without the Ark. whenever the Ark was in the Tent of Meeting the Glory Cloud would hover over the place. They didn’t dare move without their Ark or their Hope Chest. What was in it?

  1. Manna a memory of what did. When they were hungry in the wilderness with no sign of a grocery store, God fed close to a million people with flakes of bread that miraculously appeared on the ground like the morning dew. The word “Manna” is translated, “what is it?” How may times has God sustained us with, “what is it?!” We need to put in our Chest the memory of the miraculous!
  2. The staff of Aron that budded with almonds. When there was a question of Aaron’s leadership ability. God validated it by making his staff fruitful. The thing about a staff is that a piece of detached wood shouldn’t be able to still produce fruit but when God anoints it there are no limits to productivity. You need a productive staff to get you to the next level. It doesn’t matter how strong your staff is if God doesn’t anoint them to be fruitful.
  3. The Stone tablets that represented God’s word. The Ten Commandments were the guiding principles that God gave his new nation and they have remained uncompromising principles to this day. As our country faces a pivotal election there are some principles of decency that should make our choice easy. God’s word should be the principle that guides our conscience. His word should not just be written in stone but upon the tablets of our hearts. David said, “I have hidden his word in my heart that I might not sin against him (God).

Today check your Chest! What are the three things you’ve stored in your heart that can help you get to the next level?

Dear God,

Guide me through this barren land. Feed me till I want no more. I am weak but you are strong. This old world is not my home but while I’m on this tedious journey I want Jesus to walk with me. Help us Lord as we face an uncertain election and an uncertain future. We know that you hold the future in your hand. Please stock our Hope chests with the necessary ingredients to make it through whatever may come after these elections. Our Hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust a politician frame but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ the solid rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand.

In Jesus Name I put my hope,
