Luke 11:27-28 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
It’s my birthday! I always loved birthdays. My grandmother would always send my name in to the radio station in Russellville, Kentucky for the “birthday club.” Don Neagle, the DJ would select a random name for his winner. I don’t know how but it seemed like every time I would win! The package included: a 45 record, a case of bottled coco cola, and a hot fudge Sunday from the Village Barn! Grand mama and mama always made me feel special on my birthday.
Now that I’m older I realize how blessed I am to see another day on my “born day!”
A woman yelled out to Jesus when he was ministering, “blessed is the woman who gave you birth!” Jesus replied, “that’s true but those who hear the word of God and obey it are more blessed!”
Birthdays are good! Mothers who give you birth, nurture you, and send your name into the birthday club are a blessing but the highest blessing is to be Born Again!
The fact that God would even allow me to preach his word is a gift! I have this gift in this earthen vessel. Everyday that I wake up with the Holy Spirit stirring in me is a gift. Today is a gift that’s why they call it the “present!”
Regardless of how you were born or what you got on your birthday, the highest blessing is when you receive the word of God and guard it with your life. The gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ plays longer than a 45 record, satisfies your thirst better than a six pack of coco cola, and every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before and better than the hot fudge cake at Village barn.
I thank God for 48 years of living. I thank him even more of 28 years of preaching the Gospel. I am a blessed man!
Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do shall prosper.
