24 “Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. 25 The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

28 Trust in your money and down you go! But the godly flourish like leaves in spring.”

Proverbs 11:24-25, 28 NLT

There are so many commercials about getting more. Everybody seems to be advertising about how we can get more. Plastic surgeons promise to give you more sex appeal through enhancements. Motivational speakers promise more success if you come to their seminars. The world seems to be offering more to believers if they would just turn their back on their faith. The three temptations Jesus experiences in the wilderness after fasting 40 days and nights was about more; more bread, more power, more property. Jesus recognized that he could gain more by giving his life than trying to hold on to it. In this world where we suffer from a disease called affluenza, we have to learn a counter cultural principle; you get more by giving more.

  1. Give freely and become more wealthy. Become stingy and lose everything. When God discovers he can bless others through you then he begins to increase what he gives you because he trusts that you are a good conduit for blessings to come through. God will not give increase to stingy people. We think we are gaining more by refusing to give but we are actually cutting off our own supply from God. God is our provider and our generosity keeps the window open.
  2. The generous will prosper. Those that refresh others will be refreshed. A young lady in our church was burned out of her home where she was the caretaker of her aging and ailing grandparents. Our congregation collected money for her last Sunday and she was so grateful. As a result many of those who refreshed her also received refreshing. There is no way you bless somebody and God not bless you back! Prosperity follows generosity.
  3. Trust in your money and down you go. But the godly flourish like leaves in the spring! Money is a tool not a God. When we put our trust in how much money we have we will always be stuck in a downward spiral. But when our hope is in God he will lift us up causing us to branch out! Jesus told us to seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness and all of these things shall be added to you! When we prioritize God over money, it is God that makes us a priority and takes care of the money. To whom much is given much is required.

Dear God,

Thank you for trusting me with more because you found me faithful with little. Bless those who struggle financially but yet still trust you. When they step out on faith to help others please come back around and bless them. Thank you for the seed to sow in good ground. I’m expecting a harvest in four months! Seed time and harvest time will not fail for those who are generous in what you give them.

In Jesus’ Name,
