“Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts.
As I learn your righteous regulations, I will thank you by living as I should!”
“I will obey your decrees. Please don’t give up on me!”
Psalms 119:1-2, 7-8 NLT
This joy that I have, the world didn’t give it and the world can’t take it away. This age old statement summarizes the secret of life as it relates to joy. Joy is an inward condition that supersedes outside circumstances. Happiness is based on outside circumstances being optimal but joy is sustained by my relationship with God. That’s why the songwriter could boast, “I get joy when I think about what he’s done for me!”
The secret to a life of joy is…
- Joyful are people of integrity who follow the instructions of the Lord. Integrity has to do with how you live your life when no one is looking. Everybody looks good on Facebook and Instagram but what does your life look like when you’re not posting? Does your life match the image your posting? People who have integrity have joy. They are following God’s instructions. You can find those instructions in the B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth).
- Joyful are those who obey his law and search for him with all their heart. Joy only comes when we are obedient in doing what God tells us to do in his commandments. It has to be a wholehearted search before you can experience joy. Many people don’t have joy because they are half-hearted in their attempt to connect with God.
- People who have joy thank God by living like they should. Joy makes us want to live right. Nobody is perfect. We will fall short in trying to obey God. That’s why the psalmist closes by saying, “Please don’t give up on me!” The biggest reason I have joy is because God didn’t give up on me in my pursuit of him. He knows me and yet still loves me. That gives me joy!
Help me to please you in the way that I live out my life. I want people to see you when they see me. Thank you for not giving up on me but instead loving me and strengthening me to live a life full of joy unspeakable.
In Jesus’ Name,
