cross-sky1 Corinthians 1:18 “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.”

There are many people that think that Christians are silly for believing in the activities surrounding the cross. If you look at it from a surface value it could be foolish. An innocent man dies on a cross two thousand years ago and gets up from the dead. But what does that mean for us two thousand years later? Isn’t Easter about bunnies, baskets, bonnets, and eggs?

The cross was more than that! It was a universal transaction that God made for the redemption of humanity. Jesus’ death and resurrection had cosmic implications. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him will have everlasting life. The blood of our innocent Savior, the Son of God, was the only thing that could pay the debt of our sin.

  1. The cross is foolishness for those that are bent on destruction. Our human intelligence prevents some people from catching the revelation and relevance of the cross. Some people are too smart for their own good. The cross of Jesus is not something that can be understood through intellect alone but rather something experienced in your soul. That’s why the old Negro spiritual asks, “were you there the night they crucified my Lord?”
  2. It has to be experienced. I remember as a college student laying in my bed reading the biblical account of Jesus’ crucifixion. I had a vision of his blood cleansing me. I was there at Calvary! That day Christ became real to me. I’ve been called to ministry since 1988. The cross was no longer foolish to me. It was the foundation of my faith. I will cling to the old rugged cross and someday exchange it for a crown.
  3. We who are being saved know that the cross is the power of God. Our salvation begins at the cross and continues as we pick up our own crosses. We must work out our own soul salvation by carrying out the mission of the cross. We must die to our agenda and live out the commandments given to us by Jesus that he gave us during his three-year ministry on earth. The power to live life as God intended came from Jesus three days after he was crucified on the cross. This power cannot be acquired through currency. This power cannot be understood through intelligence. It can only be understood when we get underneath the cross with Jesus as Simon did when he was forced to carry Jesus’ cross. Nobody can force us. We must choose.

Dear God,

I choose what the majority of the world thinks is foolishness. I choose to believe in the power of the cross.  When Jesus died on that cross my sins were nullified. When he rose from the dead I was justified. When his Holy Spirit filled me I was sanctified. Now that I live my life for you Father, you are Glorified! Thank you for the cross. I am a fool for Christ!

In Jesus Name,
