Romans 8:5 Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored.

There seems to be an obsession with selfies these days. Every where you look on social media the pages are proliferated with people posing with “Kissy” faces, their best outfits, and even putting themselves in the foregrounds of fights. This obsession with self has led some manufacturers to come up with selfie sticks so you can get a better angle to see yourself.

Now there’s nothing wrong with an occasional shot of yourself but everyday? Where’s your friends? Your family? What’s your mission? What’s your cause? When there is a preoccupation with yourself it can lead to death in other areas.

1. Obsession with self leads to a dead end. When you are self absorbed it’s like a body of water that has no “inlets” and “outlets.” It becomes stagnant. Have you ever had the misfortune of being stuck with someone who only wants to talk about themselves?! It’s torture. When we only focus on ourselves life is drained of its meaning. We should be selfless instead of selfish.

2.  Attention to God leads to an open, spacious life. Jesus came to give us life more abundantly but his model for that life was a life of service to others and not service to self. He gave us an S.O.S command. It was for us to be involved with Service Over Self. What we do for others is more meaningful than what we do for ourselves. We miss the beauty of what is around us with our lens focused on our face everyday.

3. When we are obsessed with self we ignore God.  Sometimes we are so absorbed with ourselves that we miss God. Jesus said, “when I was hungry, you didn’t feed me. When I was naked, you didn’t clothe me. When I was in jail, you didn’t feed me.” Some of the disciples were shocked and asked when did we see you and ignore you? To paraphrase Jesus… When you were self absorbed in your selfies you failed to look around you.

Dear God,

Help me to look around me to see what others need before I focus on myself. Help me to put other people in the picture with me. Help me to see the world in full view and not limit it to just me. Open the eyes of my heart. I want to see you today.

In Jesus Name,
