“In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.”

Judges 21:25 NLT

Can anybody tell me who’s running the nation right now? It seems that 45 is spiraling out of control, sharing top secret information with the Russians.

“The question for Americans is whether this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” said an anonymous source. “Forty percent approval is not the issue; an erratic, rudderless, leaderless White House is.”

When there is no leadership a nation is in jeopardy. Where there is no vision the people cast off restraint. When there is no king the people do what they want to do. There is no moral compass.

The Israelites went through a period of time where they had judges but no king. They raped their women, waged war against their brothers, participated in genocide and sex trades. The chronicler sums it up by saying, “in those days Israel had no king and each one did what was right in his own eyes.” There was no standard bearer. The leader that God selects always sets the standard for the people to follow.

  1. They had no king. The people of Israel had no king. They were 12 tribes without centralized leadership. God had been their leader. Now that they were decentralized everybody started making up their own rules. Jesus became our universal King who saved us and gave us a moral map to follow. Jesus said, “if you love me then keep my commandments!”
  2. All the people did what seemed right in their own eyes. When you have no spiritual leadership anything goes! When you don’t know which road to take anyone will do. There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end leads to death. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life!” When we are led by God, we will not put ourselves or others in harm’s way by sharing secrets with the enemy. But when you have no king you are above the law because you think you are the law.
  3. We must be obedient to our king and realize that we are kingdom citizens. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place (John 18:36).” As kingdom citizens we have to resist leaders who have an agenda to arrest Jesus’ kingdom agenda. Anything that is anti-Christ needs to be resisted. We can’t sit by while leaderless and godless people make decisions that put our nation in peril.

Choose this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house we will serve the Lord. We have to make up our minds which kingdom we are going to serve. But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9).

Dear God,

As kingdom citizens and disciples of Christ help us to lead by example. Even when we find ourselves without God-led leadership we still need to be godly. We are your people, one nation under God, indivisible who stand for liberty and justice for all of God’s people; red, yellow, black and white. We pray for those who are wrong and stand with those who are right. Help us, God, to get America back under you and your son Jesus. Because right now we are living like we have no king and everyone, including the president, is doing what seems right in their own eyes. We need Jesus to be King of kings and Lord of lords.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
