Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.”

Thanksgiving is that time of the year where family and friends come around the table to reflect on just how good God has been. As you look at the different generations sitting together it’s amazing to see God’s hand in it all. The older I get the more thankful I am with the satisfaction of just being with the ones I love.

One of the unfortunate things that come along with planning for these thanksgiving gatherings is stress! You have to make sure that everything is in order and everyone will have enough to eat. I was talking to someone that invited family over for dinner and somebody took it upon himself or herself to invite ten other people without telling the hosts! Somehow they made it but can you imagine 5,000 plus extra people showing up on your front lawn for thanksgiving?

The only thing Jesus had was a little boy’s lunch that consisted of two fish and five loaves of bread. The disciples saw this and told Jesus to send the people away because there was no way they were going to be able to feed all those people.

Jesus said:

  1. Make the people sit down into manageable groups. Start organizing as if God is going to meet your need. Don’t wait for the miracle to happen before you get in place.
  2. Thank God for what you have not what you don’t have. Jesus lifted up the little boys lunch and thanked God for it. It’s not how big your meal is; it’s how big your thanks is.
  3. He gave the food to the disciples and they gave it to the people. The miracle happens when you take what you’ve been given and share it with other people.
  4. Everyone ate and was satisfied. When Jesus blesses the meal everybody gets to eat and they are satisfied. Notice it doesn’t say “miserable.” If you eat until you’re stuffed than you didn’t invite enough people. You should be satisfied not stuffed.
  5. They had 12 baskets left over. One for each disciple. You can’t bless other people and God not save some for you later. Go on and serve them and watch God bless you later.

Dear God,

I’m thankful for the opportunity to feed my family and anybody else you send my way. I thank you for multiplying the loaves for us to miraculously minister to those who have nothing. You have blessed us to be a blessing. I am thankful and so satisfied with everything you’ve done in my life!

In Jesus Name,

Amen
