2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “Each time he said, ‘No. But I am with you; that is all you need. My power shows up best in weak people.’ Now I am glad to boast about how weak I am; I am glad to be a living demonstration of Christ’s power, instead of showing off my own power and abilities. Since I know it is all for Christ’s good, I am quite happy about ‘the thorn,’ and about insults and hardships, persecutions and difficulties; for when I am weak, then I am strong—the less I have, the more I depend on him.”

If we are not careful we can get the big head and thank that we got what we got on our own. I remember getting older in my mother’s house and I’d let my mouth get a little slick she’d remind, “alright you not to grown to get a whooping!”

Sometimes in our progress we get to the place where we think we have outgrown God. What’s crazy is that we thought we were grown in our parents’ house until we left from under their covering. Being grown and uncovered is a totally different story.

Every now and then our parents had to chastise us to let us know, “you still in my house and under my care.” God has to do the same. Every child that God has he has to chastise. No discipline at the time seems pleasant but if God didn’t love you he wouldn’t take the time to chastise you.

Paul said, “in order that I might not get the big head in ministry because of all the wonderful things He had accomplished, God gave him a thorn in the flesh!” Some say it was his eyes. Some say Paul had a bad limp. Some say Paul got divorced. The thing that we know is that whatever it was, he asked God to remove it and God said, “no! My grace is sufficient. For when you are weak, I am strong!”

  1. Arrogance is when you think you can go on gifts alone. You don’t need God’s help. You don’t pray, you just get up and start doing things.
  2. Being puffed up with pride is when nobody can tell you anything. You know more than the people responsible for you. You no longer have a teachable spirit.
  3. Being conceited is when you think more highly of yourself than you ought to. You should never have to brag on yourself. The bible says, “let another man boast about you!”

You should give God praise for your thorns. Thorns keep you humble. Thorns can be physical ailments. When people talk about you that’s a thorn. When you go through hard times that’s a thorn. When people come for you that’s a thorn. The reality is all those things can weaken your resolve over time and thorns hurt!

But here’s the good news…when you are weak that is when God is strong in you! That’s when God’s power takes back over. That’s when you realize that this all surpassing power comes from God and not my abilities.
