“According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?” he asked. “She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her.”

For the queen’s conduct will become known to all the women, and so they will despise their husbands and say, ‘King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come.’”
Esther 1:15, 17 NIV

There have been countless women that have broken their silence about sexual abuse from men in power. There have been at least 13 women to come forward saying that President Trump inappropriately touched them without their consent as he admitted he did often in his interview with Billy Bush.

It’s amazing how Sarah Sanders, the press secretary can dismiss this abuse of power by saying that all thirteen women were lying. It’s as if we are telling these victims, “Go somewhere and shut up!” She shouldn’t have to!

Some women hold this pain for years without saying anything because of fear or shame or embarrassment. Vasti decided that she shouldn’t have to give into objectification of her sexuality.

When the king got drunk with his friends, he called for the eunuchs to escort the queen in front of the dinner party to show off her beauty. She refused.  The king got upset. He asked his legal counsel for advice. What does the law say? The law favored the paternalistic privilege of a male dominated society. The law stated that the women should be punished for not pleasing the men through their own humiliation. This was their justice.

Vasti did something noble and righteous. She didn’t come out.  Neither should you. Our daughters have to understand that they don’t have to come out and entertain men drunk with power. Our daughters should understand that they don’t have to remain silent and give into pedophiles and chauvinism.

  1. She didn’t come out to entertain drunk men. Whether they are intoxicated with wine or power you shouldn’t have to entertain people by degrading yourself.
  2. Vashti knew her value. She was the queen. In chess the most valuable piece on the board is the queen. She doesn’t dance she makes money moves! The queen has more moves than the king and her job is to protect the king so it’s in the king’s best interest not to exploit the queen!
  3. She was willing to lose her position to hold onto her character. If I can’t be all of who I am supposed to be what’s the use to holding the crown? You are a sum total of all your parts not just the ones men choose to look at. The beauty of your face may fade but your character outlasts time.

We need to change the culture. We don’t need to shame women when they don’t come out to entertain us as sexual objectified pawns and we shouldn’t shame them for having the courage to say they’ve been victims of sexual abuse. If she doesn’t want to come out that’s her choice and to go against that choice is abuse.

We have to raise our sons to respect our women as Queens. Queen Vashti set the standard for how women should respond when men want you to come out and entertain them when they are drunk with power and want to objectify you. You shouldn’t have to.

Dear God,

Help us as men to change our culture and how we see our women, sisters, daughters, and mothers. They have souls, hearts, minds, dreams, Purpose. Transform our minds to see them as you see them and to treat them with the dignity that they deserve.

In Jesus’ Name,
