“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV

When you are running in a race the worst thing you can do is to focus on who you’re competing with. It can throw your stride off and make you lose focus. Instead you have to remember what your goal is and run the race that you’ve been training for.

Life is no different. The enemy’s job is to get you distracted so that you will not finish the race. Instead of being distracted we should be encouraged.

  1. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. There have been people who have gone before us that can bear witness that God is able to get us through whatever it is that we are currently up against. If he did it before he can do it again!
  2. Let us throw off every sin that so easily entangles. There some things that could trip us up and we should throw them off. There are some bad habits and extra weight we don’t need. If it cause you to stumble you don’t need it.
  3. Let us run with perseverance. The race is not given to the swift nor to the strong but to those that endure to the end. Life is a marathon not a sprint. We have to pace ourselves so that we will not burn out before we finish.
  4. We have to fix our eyes on Jesus who is the author and the finisher of our faith. Jesus is our model for finishing strong. Jesus kept his focus on his heavenly mission and was able to endure the pain of the cross. When we focus on him nothing can stop us from finishing our race.

Dear God,

Help me to focus on you today. There are so many distractions that want to get me off my game but you are still the same. I will not turn to the left or to the right. I’m determined to finish my race and stay in my lane. Give me the ability to finish strong!

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
