Love God and Love People

Matthew 22:37-39
New Living Translation (NLT)
37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]

Watching the reunion of “The Real Atlanta Housewives” was disturbing on many fronts. First, the portrayal of sisterhood has turned into a war of words and splintered relationships. Second, the imagery of a housewife is anything but Real in relationship of the Proverbs 31 woman. Thirdly, the word “Christian” is thrown around without any real credibility because their version of it is so sterile.

People will know whether we are Christians by our love. I didn’t see any true love between these women as they reached the most base levels of insult, betrayed each others confidence, and assassinated each others character. Love doesn’t’ do that.

If there is any confusion as to what it means to be a Christian, Jesus made it easy for us to know what it looks like. He said, there are two commandments that are the greatest and if we keep them we pretty much have the whole bible right.

1. Love the Lord your God….Jesus said, “if you love me then keep my commandments. You can’t love God and do the opposite of what he says. When we love god we must do so with…

a. All our heart. Our hearts have no vacancy for malice, hate, or deceit. When we Love God with our heart there is no room for evil.
b. All our soul. Our eyes are the window to the soul. We must be careful of what we set our eyes on to protect our soul. As a deer pants for water so should our soul long for God and the things of God.
c. All our mind. We should have the mind of Christ. Our minds should be set on whatever is right, holy, and noble. Our mindset determines our capacity to love.

2. Love your neighbor as your love yourself. Unfortunately too many people don’t have a healthy love of self to be able to love their neighbors. Thinking highly of oneself is not the same as loving oneself. To love yourself is to put yourself in check, so God can be seen in you. People can be so full of themselves that they don’t have room to love anybody else. When you are full of God it makes it easier to love your neighbor as God loves you. Love wants the best for others.

Dear God,

Show me how to love again and be real in my love to others. Don’t let me be rude and call it Love. Don’t’ let me be hateful and call it Christian. Help me to Love you God and to Love your People.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
