“Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NLT

I am strongest when I’m at my weakest. This seems paradoxical to the world’s standard of strength and success. Society says that we have to flex our muscles and show our intellect to prove how worthy we are. But God reminds us over and over and over that it is by God’s grace that we do what we do.

The apostle Paul struggled with a thorn. We don’t know what it was for sure. Some say it was his failing eyesight or some kind of sickness. Some say he had a contentious wife that really didn’t support his ministry. We don’t know for sure but what we do know is that it bothered him and he asked God to take it away. He asked God three times to take it away and each time God said, “No! Because when you’re weak I’m strong!”

Why won’t you take away what bothers me God?

  1. Because grace is all you need. Some people get some success and think they got there by their own ability. Pride sets in and they think that God’s favor is based on merit. God blesses us because he loves us not because we are so efficient.
  2. God’s power works best in weakness. Holiness is what we long for but brokenness is what we need. Paul said, “To keep me from getting puffed up God gave me a messenger to torment me. He gave me a thorn.” Some Christians get too puffy and their head swells because they think nobody else is as dedicated, holy, authentic, soldout as they are. That’s when God has to deflate your ego with a thorn to let some of that hot air out!
  3. That’s why I take pleasure in my sufferings for when I’m weak I’m strong! This resistance, this hardship, this hating, this disrespect that I’m experiencing only makes me stronger. Because when I’m weak God is stronger in me!

Dear God,

Thank you for considering me worthy to suffer for Christ’s sake! When I’m weak you are strong! You get all of the glory and the honor. This ain’t about me! It’s all about you!! Use my thorns to keep me grounded and filled with the Holy Ghost and emptied of my ego.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
