“My ambition has always been to preach the Good News where the name of Christ has never been heard, rather than where a church has already been started by someone else. I have been following the plan spoken of in the Scriptures, where it says, “Those who have never been told about him will see, and those who have never heard of him will understand.””
Romans 15:20-21 NLT

We spend an inordinate amount of time trying to copy what other people are already doing rather than being creative to chart out a course where nobody has gone before. We get stuck with so much creative potential inside of us because we keep swimming in the pond of comparison rather then venturing out into the blue ocean of creative opportunity.

Memphis is a very religious city with thousands of churches for people to choose from. There are some great churches doing great things. God calls different people to serve in different churches. They key is to discover how God has called each church to differentiate itself from the others.

On a microlevel it’s important for us as individuals to discover who it is that God has called us to be. It’s so boring for us to act like and look like everyone else. God called us to be different and to respect each other’s difference. Our difference does not equate to deficiency. It’s really okay to be different!

  1. Our church ambition and my ambition as a pastor has always been to reach people that have not been reached by the gospel. I want to preach to people who don’t feel comfortable coming into a traditional church or a church period! There is a certain kind of empathy you have to possess to reach people who’ve never heard the gospel or received what they’ve heard.
  2. There has to be a hunger to reach people who haven’t surrendered to Jesus. Many pastors are comfortable swapping sheep. I believe God wants us to go where nobody’s heard and stop fishing in the aquarium of other churches for the already convinced.
  3. There’s a whole community of people waiting for us to come and share the good news of Jesus Christ. We must develop a hunger to reach people that haven’t been reached. Our churches would not be able to hold all the people who are hungry for God’s Word if we would stop focusing on the wrong stuff.

Dear God-

There are too many people that need good news for me to be tripping on people that choose different. The people you’ve called to me can’t leave and the people you haven’t called to walk with me can’t stay. Give me the courage and confidence to go after the people who need and want to hear about Jesus. Don’t let me spend another day stuck in religious entertainment, but rather go after people who are ready to be spiritually empowered.

In Jesus’ Name,
