“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem. Tell her that her sad days are gone and her sins are pardoned. Yes, the LORD has punished her twice over for all her sins.” Isaiah 40:2 NLT

Luther Vandross had a song called, “Its over now,” where he talked about a woman that had cheated on him and he was declaring that the relationship was over. He lamented, “you treated me so bad, it’s over now!”

God proclaimed the same lamentation for his people Israel. They had cheated on God by serving other idol god’s. God had given Israel over to the Babylonians to be oppressed because of their spiritual adultery. But unlike Luther he allowed for reconciliation and he declares that the punishment for her infidelity is over now!

Mercy is when God does not allow the punishment for our sins to consume us. There are consequences for our sins but mercy gives us space for recovery.

Advent is a time to reflect on the fact that God sent Jesus for us to receive the Good News that it’s over now!

  1. Our sad days are gone. When we yielded to sin we had nothing to show for it but shame. Sometimes it’s not until you mess up a good thing that wake up saddened by your own poor choices. God knows that we are lost without him and he sent Jesus to bring us back. Our sad days are over!
  2. Our sins are pardoned. Based upon what we’ve done wrong we really should still be serving time for our crime against God. Justice demanded that we should die but mercy said “not so!” Jesus was born to die for our sins after he taught us a better way to live.
  3. Sometimes God doesn’t have to punish us for our sins. Our sins punish us! Sometimes we are punished twice by God and the consequences but the good news is that when we repent of our sins and ask for forgiveness it’s over now! If you confess your sins God is quick to forgive you of your sins. If you want the misery to end, ask God for forgiveness and it will be over right now!

Dear God,

Thank you for sending my redeemer Jesus. I was condemned to die because of my mistakes but Jesus came to me and said, “it’s over now!” He told those tormenting demons in my life to hit the road and never come back! It’s over now! Thank you for this new lease on life. Today I will walk in the newness of life and all of the old things that weighed me down are over right now!

In Jesus Name,
