Matthew 1:22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Everything that happens in your life God uses it. That doesn’t mean that God intended for everything to happen but because it happened he decided to use it for your good. Paul said it another way, “All things work for the good of those that love the Lord and are called according to his purpose.”

I was reading about the birth of Jesus this morning and I kept noticing the phrase, “this happened so that…” Every time some unfortunate event took place it was followed by the phrase “this happened so that the prophecy would be fulfilled.” God had already preordained Jesus birth and his purpose. His life was on a trajectory towards greatness and God used tragedy to propel him into triumph. Joseph almost divorced Mary before they consummated the marriage because she was pregnant. God sent an angel to tell Joseph it was of the Holy Spirit. That’s how Jesus got his name. Mary and Joseph had to go pay their taxes in her 9 month. She went into labor on the way. This happened to fulfill scripture about his birthplace. Herod tried to kill baby Jesus. They had to hide in Egypt. This happened to fulfill scripture that said, “out of Egypt I have called my son!”

  1. Did you ever stop to think that out of all the series of misfortunate events in your life that God might be using them to get you where you need to be?
  1. God doesn’t cause all things but he uses all things. Some of the choices we make cause consequences that God steps into and redirects us to his purpose.
  1. When you have a purpose God will make sure you get there when you surrender to his will no matter the detours life throws at you.
  1. Everything happens for a reason. Whether we intended it or God planned it; ultimately it works out so that the plans that God has for our lives can be fulfilled.

The only way they don’t work out is when we are disobedient to God’s intervention. Each time something bad happened God spoke to Joseph and he obeyed. If you don’t obey there is a danger that your purpose will not be fulfilled. Trust and obey for there’s no other way to fulfill your purpose. This has to happen!

Dear God,

Help me to stop focusing on the bad that happened and instead focus on the good that you want to come out of it. The good and the bad had to happen in my life so that I could become the person you wanted me to be. Today I will not look for everything to go my way but I will look for the path that takes me your way. I know now that some things have to happen.

 In Jesus Name,
