reflectionGenesis 45:5 “But don’t be angry with yourselves that you did this to me, for God did it! He sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives. ”

When we look back on our lives we can see a path littered with memories of people who hurt us but if we looked closer they actually helped us. I remember many times getting stuck in snow or mud and we had to push the car out. The people behind the car often got the brunt of the mud from the tire spinning its way out. The folks pushing got dirty.

Looking back we see dirty people but in actuality they pushed you forward.

Joseph could have seen his brothers as dirty people for pushing him into a pit with no water in it. But Joseph shows us spiritual maturity in how to deal with people who did us wrong.

  1. Don’t be angry with yourself. Wow. He shifts his anger to compassion when he sees Judah’s remorse. When enough time has passed we need to shift from anger to compassion. Especially when you can see how God used the trauma for your good.
  2. God sent me here ahead of you.  What was the purpose for your pain? God sent you ahead of the people that tried to hurt you. The separation had to happen. That traumatic event separated you but sent you to a specified place.
  3. God sent me ahead of you for the saving of many lives. Joseph saved his whole family from a famine. The same people that doubted him. The same brothers that sold him into slavery, God used Joseph to save. God has to separate you from the herd so you can help them in the end.

Today as you look back over your life don’t see dirty people. See them as people who pushed you into your destiny. Forgive them and move on.

Dear God,

Help me to be bigger than my hurt. Open my eyes to the reality that I’m better because of what I survived. I’ve been able to save thousands because of the few that tried to hurt me and I’m determined to help more.

In Jesus Name,
