“Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” John 8:34-36 NLT

Contrary to what Kanye West believes about slavery in America, Africans had no choice when they were kidnapped from West Africa and brought to “docilizing islands” in the Caribbean where they were beaten and conditioned to be slaves. Many of the Africans who survived the middle passage revolted because they refused to be slaves.

Nobody chooses to be a slave, but then again… do we?

We are no longer kidnapped but we are still being conditioned for slavery. Our dependence upon technology, our self-medication with drugs, sex, and alcohol have created a new kind of slave. We are locked into a slavery system called the matrix. It’s place where we are slaves to societal conditioning. We cannot think for ourselves but instead we are chained to our appetites and told through marketing what we should be hungry for. We are slaves to sin.

The apostle Paul described it best when he said…

For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Romans 7:18-20, 24-25

Sin is anything that leads us away from God’s standard as expressed through his Holy Word.

The only way we can be set free is by choosing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. In this world you are going to be a slave one way or the other. Choose today who you are going to serve; will it be sin which leads to death or Jesus who has the power to set you free?

I choose the Son of God. For he whom the Son sets free is free indeed and I just wanna be free!

Dear God,

I choose Jesus because I want to be free. Forgive me for the times that I gave into the conditioning of this world and lived below your standard. Give me the discipline to focus on living up to higher standards and reaching new levels of conscientiousness. I am no longer a slave but I am your servant forever.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen
