I had to be in My Father’s House

During this pandemic of Coronivid-19 health officials are asking us to stay home to flatten the mortality curve. Large gatherings of people of 50 or above make people more susceptible to contracting the disease from people who are infected.

The average church in America consists of 75 people. Even our smaller churches are at risk of spreading the disease just by gathering.

It is our custom to gather together for worship unless we put each other at risk. Thank God we have other ways to worship God in spirit and in truth without putting our people at risk. That’s why we will be streaming online only for worship until this pandemic passes.

Jesus’ promise to us was that where two or three are gathered he would be there in the midst. As we exercise our faith with wisdom we have decided to have our people stay home and worship together by streaming online. I struggled with the idea because I know God is pleased when his people come together but there are times when God wants us to stay home until the plague passes over.

When God delivered the children of Israel out of slavery, he sent a plague that killed the firstborn in Egypt because Pharoah wouldn’t let the people go worship God. The last measure was the last plague of the death of the first born and God sent his people to their homes with instructions to stay there until the death angel passed over. They were to make a sacrifice of a lamb and smear its blood over the door posts so the death angel would see the blood and Passover.

This Coronavirus did not come to stay. It came to pass! We are being obedient by staying in the house until it passes over.

It was during Passover that Jesus parents lost their son. They had left worship on their way back home when they discovered Jesus was missing. They turned around to go back and find him and three days later they located him in the temple asking questions of the religious leaders.

His parents were worried sick looking for Jesus and asked him why he would do such a thing. Jesus replied, “didn’t you know that I had to be in my fathers house!”

This is our primary response as believers that we all must be in our Fathers house. Our places of worship especially during Passover are our default places to gather. Who doesn’t want to be at church during Passover or dealing with something you hope “passes over?!”

The church, temple, mosque, synagogue are places where we gather to ask questions and learn truth but even Jesus left with his parents when it was time to go back to their own house.

The Bible says Jesus was obedient to his parents and left his Fathers house to go home with his parents.

For our own protection God has sent those who’ve been given authority over our well being to get us to go home for Passover. If Jesus who is the Son of God can submit to earthly authority and leave the temple for the house can’t we leave the church building and be the church in our homes to save lives?

When Jesus went back home with his parents the Bible says he grew in wisdom, stature, and favor. He didn’t stay in the Temple he went home and grew so that when he returned to the Temple he was teaching instead of asking questions!

This plague did not come to stay it came to pass! We will not have to stay at home forever but while this plague is passing through our cities and our country we are being led to stay home until it passes over. I believe that our churches will grow without us being in the building. And when God releases us to go back to his house we will be better than we were before we had to go home.

This too shall pass!
