“Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. (Interlude) How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred.”

Psalms 55:6-8 NLT

Have you ever just wanted to get away?! There are times when the atmosphere around you can be so stifling with people who don’t support you that you have an urge to take flight. I had to get away last week because I felt hate engulfing my soul. It was time to pull away to get some fresh air and perspective. It’s always amazing to get in an airplane and get above the clouds. When I flew out of the city there was an overcast of doom and gloom, but when I got above the clouds the sun was shining!

Sometimes it’s just a matter of taking flight to see the other side of your situation.

David was surrounded by haters. People he was once close with wanted him dead. King Saul was jealous of David and wanted him dead. David was stuck in a cave with nowhere to go but in his spirit he had the urge to fly. He told God, “Oh that I had wings like a dove I would fly away and be at rest from the haters that encircle me!”

  1. It’s important for your sanity that you take the time to evacuate toxic environments. When you can’t change the place where you are then you need to change your location, at least temporarily, so you can get a strategy on how you go forward. David was stuck in the cave until God dealt with his enemies. In the meantime he took flight in his spirit.
  2. You have to get rest so you can be at your best. It’s hard to make good decisions when you’re stressed. When you are constantly in “fight or flight” mode it causes your adrenaline to deplete your serotonin, which is your hormone that elicits pleasant feelings. Rest restores your good hormones. Get some rest. Going to bed before 11 p.m. is equivalent to getting three more hours of sleep.
  3. Fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Sometimes you need a good retreat where you can spend some quiet time with the Lord. Find a quiet place by the water, in a cafe, in the park where you can hear God.  The storm of hatred can be so loud that it drowns the voice of God. You owe it to yourself to fly away and get you some rest. While you’re resting God will deal with your haters!

I think this song from Kandi Buress of the group Xscape says it best:

All you haters, you’re the wind beneath my wings

You just make me fly higher, higher, higher

Oh you just make me fly higher, make me fly higher, make me fly higher

I’m like a jet airplane

Way too high to hear you throwing salt on my name

I know I’m not the only one if people love to hate you

Gon and throw your hands up go ahead

And spread your wings cause you gotta fly above

Dear God,

I choose to fly above my haters. When they choose to go low, I will choose to go high! I have too much purpose on my life to allow people who are miserable to keep me in a cave! Thank you God for silencing all the murmuring around me and helping me to soar beyond the clouds of confusion. I have the clarity to clear out the clutter and confusion. I’m ready to move forward and soar higher.

In Jesus’ Name,
