Romans 7:17 But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time.

BB King had a song that said, “I’d like to live the life that I sing about in my songs.” Sometimes in church we sing more than we actually believe. We have the best intentions but there is a war within ourselves that creates a tension of belief and practice. It’s easy to look at someone and judge them when there is a contradiction in their lives. We like to label people as hypocrites when the say one thing and do another. I believe there is a group of people who earnestly want to live a Christian life and live the life that they sing about in their songs but they can’t.

Now this doesn’t let us off the hook to say we should abandon the pursuit of righteousness but it should bring you some relief in knowing that everybody struggles. The danger is when you surrender to your dark side.

God’s word is a reminder of what our righteous intentions should be. However there is something you should know. You can’t do it by yourself!!

  1. Will power is not enough. It’s a start but it cannot sustain you. Zechariah 4:6 So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty.
  1. The power of sin will sabotage your best intentions. The more we are led by the Spirit, the more we are able to defeat the flesh. You must he spirit fed to be spirit led.
  1. Realize you don’t have what it takes. You have to be honest with yourself by admitting that you are powerless and you don’t know everything. The wisest man in the world told God, “I am just a child and I don’t know what I’m doing.” King Solomon asked God for wisdom. It’s such a relief to tell God you don’t know instead walking around like you know everything.
  1. Something has gone wrong deep within me. When your actions keep betraying your beliefs it’s something wrong on the inside and you can’t fix it on your own.

I was talking to my armor bearer about his son’s car. It is a Lexus. It’s generally a good car but sometimes it would not start up. Come to find out it’s a computer problem. As much as the car should run because it has a good engine and a nice body and a good name the computer was bad. They had to get a new computer and find somebody who specialized in fixing it.

When you figure out that you have something going on deep within you have to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal what’s wrong and find someone who specializes in your issue. You have a great mind, great body, and a good name. You just have a memory issue. You have a hard drive issue. There’s a virus in your family lineage find someone who can fix it.

Dear God,

I’m glad you sent Jesus to fix my situation. When nothing else could help your love lifted me. I’m glad you didn’t give up on me when I failed you again and again. I want nothing more than to please you. Help my actions to match my convictions. Let me decrease so your spirit may increase. I can’t do it without you but through Christ Jesus I can do all things.
