“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” 1 Peter 5:7-10 NIV

We all at some point will be going through something. I was watching the documentary “899 blocks” about the story of the high school football team from the inner city of East St. Louis. I cried and rejoiced over the adversity these young men went through on their way to victory. From poverty, to dysfunctional families, emotional demons, loss of loved ones, and crime; they had to overcome so much. When one of the young men lost his cousin and best friend, the whole team felt it. The coach embraced the young man and, “It’s always something!”

How do we get through what we are going through?

  1. Cast all your anxiety on Jesus for he cares for you. God cares about what we are going through. There’s no need for us to carry unnecessary burdens when God wants to lift them. Give your anxious thoughts to Jesus in the form of a prayer.
  2. Be alert and sober-minded so you can recognize the devil. The enemy loves when we get drunk and high because our discernment and judgement are impaired. It’s so easy to get high when we are anxious but then we get deeper into our dilemma because we didn’t recognize our way of escape. We must choose to stay sober when we are going through.
  3. Resist the devil and stand firm in your faith. When we resist the devil by not giving into our temptation to divert from God’s will the devil will flee from you. We have to stand firm in our faith. When the enemy sees you standing firm in what you believe he then decides to move on.
  4. After you have come through God himself will restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. Restoration comes after your testing. God will give you back what you thought you lost and strengthen you where you have been weakened and make your life in Him sustainable.

Whatever you’re going through God will get you through it as long as you remain in him.

Dear God,

Bless those who are going through something this morning. Don’t let them give up or self-medicate through drugs, sex, or alcohol. Instead help us to totally surrender to you knowing that this is out of our control but no surprise to you. God get us through this and grant us the victory on the other side of this. I pray that everybody who saw us going through will know that it was you who got us through and it is you who will sustain us.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen!
