testJohn 6:5-6 Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.

Many times when we are faced with overwhelming odds it is simply God’s way to see if you are going to trust him. Every teacher has to see if you’ve been paying attention to what they’ve been teaching you by testing you. By this time you should know who God is and that he is faithful. If you are in a place that seems impossible it could be that Jesus is testing you, because he already knows what he’s going to do.

Here’s the problem:

  1. We got too many hungry people. Jesus was teaching a crowd of 5k plus. They had needs. They needed food and Jesus asked his disciples where were they going to get enough food. The disciples looked from a natural standpoint and panicked. They said, “Even if we had eight months worth of wages we couldn’t give everybody a bite!” The whole time he was asking the question, Jesus already knew what he was going to do.
  1. Not enough food. They didn’t have enough money or food to feed all these people. Sometimes when we look at our resources compared to what we need it makes us want to just close up shop. One of the disciples told Jesus to just send the people home. Jesus asked, “What do we have?”
  1. Two fish, five loaves of bread, and plenty of grass…one Messiah! It almost seemed comical when somebody said, “Here’s a little boys lunch,” but he wasn’t laughing when he gave it. This little boy’s faith was bigger than the disciples who walked close with Jesus for three years. It would seem like the ones who walked with Jesus the longest would see the answer to the test quicker but a child saw it first. There was plenty of grass so Jesus said, “Have them sat down in small groups so I can pray and feed them.”
  1. Plenty of food and some left over. After the people sat down, Jesus prayed and multiplied the fish and the bread. They had 12 baskets of leftovers. Whenever we take care of the people, God will take care of us!

Whatever you are short in Jesus is ready to make up the difference but he’s testing you to see if you will trust him even when the numbers don’t add up. He’s asking you the question but he already knows what he’s going to do!

Dear God,

I trust you! It gets scary sometimes looking at the need and how much I got left. I know you sent these people to me and they are hungry. We have a two fish and five loaves budget and a 5,000 people need. We want the people to be fed but we need you to make up the difference. Help us to look at your track record and be confident that if you did it before you will do it again. Work a miracle in our finances, our families, and our jobs. Help us to feed our families and help our neighbors. Don’t let us become cynical and short sighted but to believe even more in the power of prayer and miracles. There will be enough bread to feed the need and we will have some left over!

In Jesus Name,
