Mark 9:23-24

“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

When you were a child you believed you could do anything. We actually believed we could fly. How many little boys put on capes and jumped off of platforms believing they would take off like Superman? How many young girls believed that one day they would meet their Prince Charming? Then we messed up and got old! It seems the older we got the more cynical we became.

boy-capeThe disappointments in life can lead to disillusionment. The only difference is that beyond imagination and myth exists faith. There is another reality beyond what we can physically see but if you’re not careful you will lose your ability to believe in the possibilities beyond your own natural abilities.

A man brought his young son to Jesus. The young son was robbed of his childhood wonderment. This young boy couldn’t dream of flying because a demonic spirit kept throwing him to the ground in a fit of convulsions. The father brought him to Jesus’ disciples but they couldn’t do anything.

This father represents parents of this generation who have almost given up on the church because they brought their children to Jesus’ Disciples at the church but they couldn’t do anything. As a result many have stopped believing until they have a real encounter with Jesus.

The father asks Jesus to help his son, ‘If he can.’ Jesus is a little upset with this desperate and disillusioned father. He replies, “If I can?! All things are possible if you just believe!” The father says one of the most real statements in the bible. “I believe but help me with my unbelief!”

How can Jesus help us with our unbelief?

1. You have to admit that you have some unbelief in you. There are some people who believe in Jesus but approach him with some unbelief in him. It’s impossible to please God without faith. The way we overcome unbelief is by admitting we have some.

2. Try God again. Even though some of God’s representatives failed you doesn’t mean that Jesus will. Man can fail. Jesus will never fail you if you believe.

3. Watch Jesus do it! When the Father gave his son to Jesus, he called out the evil spirit. The boy fell down and looked like he was dead. The father could have panicked but instead he believed and his son was restored. Believe Jesus despite what it looks like.

4. Realize that some situations require fasting and prayer. Belief is good but some situations are so difficult that you must add fasting and praying with it. These disciplines add focus and power to your belief.

I believe you can fly. I believe God has someone special he wants to send in your life but the question is, “Do you believe and have you overcome your unbelief?!”

Dear God,

Help me with my unbelief. Remove any disillusionment from my spirit. Give me a childlike trust in Jesus. Take away cynicism and replace it with a faith the size of a mustard seed so that today I can move mountains with my faith. I believe you can do the impossible. Difficult takes a day and impossible just takes a little longer with prayer and fasting.

In Jesus Name,
