“But now, since you didn’t believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time.”

Luke 1:20 (NLT)

In the movie, “Get Out” Chris goes to visit his girlfriend Rose’s family for the first time. He walks into a racist trap that seeks to subjugate him into a mindless slave. During an attempt to hypnotize him, Chris is put into a trance and he is subconsciously sent to a “sunken place.” It appears he’s conscious but he can’t say anything.

This is a deep movie. It makes me wonder how many people have been relegated to a “sunken place” due to the the manipulation of their thoughts. Pride makes you think more of yourself than you should whereas racism makes you think less of yourself than you should.

Zechariah was an old priest with an old barren wife. They had been waiting to have a child but couldn’t. Zechariah was serving in the temple, but his wife was barren. When it came time for Zechariah to serve in the temple the people were outside praying. God sent his angel to bring Zechariah out of his “sunken place.” They had been oppressed by the racist Roman government and culturally marginalized due to his wife’s barrenness.

Zechariah had been there so long that he couldn’t believe the words of the angel and asked, “How can I be sure this will happen? I’m an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.”

The angel said, “I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was he who sent me to bring you this good news! But now, since you didn’t believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time.”

  1. Sunken places begin with your beliefs. What you choose to think about and dwell on in this life will make or break you regarding what type of person you will end up becoming in this life. You have to watch what thoughts you allow to manifest concerning who you are.
  2. Sunken places are a result of not believing what God says about you. Zechariah had to remain silent until the day his son was born.  Sometimes God has to mute us because we have allowed negative thoughts to contaminate our speech.
  3. People come out of sunken places when they are able to speak what God revealed to them. When John the Baptist was born his father wrote on a chalkboard the name the angel gave him. God loosed his tongue and Zechariah spoke after nine months of being in a “sunken place.”  You are released from sunken places when you stop listening to fake news and speak God’s truth!

Do not allow anyone or anything to cause you to go into a “sunken place!” You have to stand on what God spoke to you and not give into negative thoughts about you!  The people are waiting for you to come out of it and say something! What are you going to call your miracle? You name it!

Dear God,

Help me to open my mouth and speak what you gave me. Do not allow me to shrink back into a “sunken place” when you are taking me into a spacious place. Break low self-esteem and mind manipulation off of your people. Don’t let us get any “tea” that corrupts the way we think about ourselves or others. Protect our ears from anything that cause us to sink into sin but instead raise our level of consciousness.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
