Christ in the storm 2Don’t You Care that We Are Drowning?

Mark 4:38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

I remember my cousin was visiting my home when we had a pool. She was swimming and had drifted into the deep end. I noticed that she was bobbing. She was smiling and bobbing. Because I knew my pool and knew that she smiled when she was nervous. I knew she was about to drown. I reached out and grabbed her and brought her to the edge.

She was blessed to have somebody in the pool with her who recognized she was drowning behind her smile. How many of us are drowning while smiling? We have the appearance that everything is okay but we are drowning. What’s worse is that we have Jesus on board and we are drowning.

How can you have Jesus on board and be drowning? How can you have Jesus and be in debt? How can you have Jesus and be drowning in your sorrow? How can you be in church and be overwhelmed? Does Jesus care that you are drowning?

The Disciples were trying to get to the other side of the lake with Jesus in their boat. On their way a storm arose and sent water crashing in on them to the point that the boat looked like it was going to sink. Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat on a pillow. The disciples woke him up and asked him, “Don’t you care that we are about to drown?!” Jesus woke up and spoke to the storm, “Peace be still!” Everything got quiet!

Jesus asked them two questions:

1. Why are you so afraid? He answered with a question. Why are you afraid when I am in the boat with you? The safest place in a storm is in the boat where Jesus is. It’s natural for our lizard brain to communicate with our mammalian brain that we are in danger but the next step is for our spirit to talk to Jesus. If Jesus is in your boat why are you so afraid?

2. He’s not saying anything. He’s asleep! Maybe he’s waiting to see if you are going to wake him or trust him enough to speak to it.

3. The waves are scaring me! It can be scary but don’t forget to keep your eyes on Jesus. Peter walked on water as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus. When he focused on the wind and the waves he began to sink. What are you focused on?

Where is your Faith? Jesus was always telling his Disciples to speak to something! Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen!

It’s not that Jesus doesn’t care it’s that he is waiting on us to care and to activate our faith. We see people drowning behind fake smiles. We see conditions in our neighborhoods that are not just. Jesus is waiting for us to stand up in the middle of our situation and say, “Peace Be Still!” We have authority over our storm. We have control over our finances. We have the ability to stop the drama. We have to use our faith. He cares all about our struggles. He will guide until the day is done and the storm is over. Call him up and tell him what you want! Speak those things that are not as though they were. The storm is over!

Dear God,

Thank you for not letting me drown! It seemed like I was going to be overwhelmed with debt and depression. I was trying to smile my way through it but I was tired of faking it. The master of the sea heard my despairing cry and from the waters you lifted me now safe am I! When nothing else could help your love lifted me. I love you Lord Jesus and I than you that my storm is over!

In Jesus Name,
