Unequally Yoked2 Corinthians 6:14 “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”

A yoke is a wooden beam  normally used between a pair of oxen  or other animals to enable them to pull together on a load when working in pairs, as oxen usually do; some yokes are fitted to individual animals. There are several types of yoke, used in different cultures, and for different types of oxen. A pair of oxen may be called a yoke of oxen, and yoke is also a verb, as in “to yoke a pair of oxen”

There is somebody that God has ordained for you to be yoked with. There’s someone who’s called to help you pull your load. It’s important for you to know who’s called to walk with you and whom you need to walk away from. If you get yoked up with the wrong person it can throw your walk off.

Paul warns the Corinthians not to be yoked up with unbelievers. Does that mean we can’t associate with unbelievers? Of course not, if that were the case we would have to stay secluded. Paul is talking about a close relationship. We need to be connected to people who…

  1. Believe God the same way we do. Nothing throws you off more than walking with people who are pulling you in the opposite direction. How can two walk together unless they agree?
  2. Walk with people who are headed in the same direction. If you are not trying to live right why should I keep walking with you and our paths are totally different? The person you are connected to relationally should have the same life goals.
  3. Walk with people who have the light of God in them. There’s enough darkness in the world. You need to be yoked with people who illuminate your mind not douse your light. If they don’t make you better then you shouldn’t walk with them.

Dear God,

Link me up with the right people. I don’t have time for people who are pulling me from your path and my purpose. Most of all let me draw close to you because you are my ultimate guide. I accept your invitation to be yoked. “Come unto me all you that labor and I will give you rest! Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for  your Yoke is easy and your burdens are light!”

In Jesus Name,
