“Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread. “Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread?

Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’”
Matthew 16:5-8, 11 NLT

Money is one of the things that cause so many arguments among people who are supposed to be in agreement. Married couples get divorced over money. Business partners split over money. Churches stagnate over the lack of money because they have members who love their money more than God.

But yet money isn’t the real issue. It’s a yeast problem!

On one occasion Jesus was crossing the lake with his disciples when they discovered they forgot to bring bread. Then to make it worse Jesus told them, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees!” Not only were they embarrassed for not bringing bread but now they were being chastised by Jesus so they started arguing.

The lack of bread always seems to start arguments. Jesus asks them, “Why are you arguing over bread?! Don’t you remember the two miracles where I fed 9,000 people with 12 loaves of bread and y’all had leftovers?! I am the provider of the bread. Y’all don’t have a bread problem. You have a yeast problem!”

The apostle Paul said that a little yeast affects the whole dough. When Moses was delivering the children of Israel out of Egypt he told them to make bread without yeast. The yeast Jesus was talking about was the religious spirit of the hypocritical Pharisees and Sadducees.

God will always supply the bread! we just have to get rid of the yeast.

What is the yeast?

  1. Having a form of godliness. Like Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:5, beware of people who have a form of godliness but deny its power. Have nothing to do with such people. People who have no real connection to the Holy Spirit are dangerous to the body. You must disconnect from them before they corrupt you with their yeast. On one occasion Jesus saw some yeast on Peter’s attitude. “Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.””  Matthew‬ ‭16:23‬ ‭NLT‬‬
  2. Gossip is yeast. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29
  3. Yeast is anybody that causes division. I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. Romans 16:17-18

God always provides the bread it’s up to you to get rid of the yeast!

Dear God,

Help me to sweep my house clean of any yeast that might mess up my bread. Give me the strength to let go of any attitudes or people that may hurt my earning capacity. In 2018 I’m getting rid of all the yeast that puffs up but adds no substance. I’d rather have a thin staff with substance than a fluffed up staff with too much yeast. Give me a team that can flat out pray, produce, and participate in the vision you have set forth for us to rise into. Thank you for the provision for the vision. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive those that tried to bring us yeast!

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen!
