Exodus 32:8 “How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live! They have melted down gold and made a calf, and they have bowed down and sacrificed to it. They are saying, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”

We just completed an amazing 21 day fast. There are so many stories of spiritual breakthrough and healthier lives. I understand that some of us missed some of the things in our diets but we have to be careful not to undo the good that was done by turning away from the discipline too soon. Eating vegetables, fruits, and drinking water are staples to a healthy diet not punishment. We can’t turn away too soon.

The Israelites had been delivered miraculously from slavery in Egypt. God was establishing them as a nation. God called Moses to the top of the mountain for 40days and 40nights to receive the Ten Commandments. These life principles would guide the new nation to Holy living but while Moses was gone “too long” they

  1. Turned away. Moses had been gone 40 days and the people asked Aaron to make them an idol god since God’s representative, Moses was gone. They took their gold earrings and fashioned a bull and started worshipping it. It’s amazing how we take the things God blessed us with it and start worshipping it; instead of him, our money, cars, clothes, homes become our gods.
  2. Turned up. Many of us begin our drift from God through “revelry.” That is lively festivities, which involve consuming large amounts of alcohol. There’s nothing wrong with having a good time as long as you remember that good times don’t replace good worship. When Saturday night replaces Sunday morning your “turn up” has turned you away from God.
  3. God turned from his anger. God was so angry with the people he wanted to kill all of them but Moses interceded for them. The only reason we are not dead is because somebody prayed for us to have more time to get ourselves back together. God is giving us time to get back into alignment with his will.
  4. Return back to God. When Moses came down and saw the people worshipping the golden calf it was worse than he imagined. He asked those who were remorseful to come stand with him and they slaughtered three thousand of their own relatives to purify the camp. The Old Testament was bloody and brutal. Thank God for the New Testament and how Jesus saved us from our destruction by giving his own life for our sin. But there is still some separating we need to do. Scripture tells us to come away from those who are caught up in revelry. You were once a part of that foolishness but since Jesus saved you it’s time for you to separate yourself from them and turn back to God.
