16 Jesus replied with this story: “A man prepared a great feast and sent out many invitations.

18 But they all began making excuses. One said, ‘I have just bought a field and must inspect it. Please excuse me.

24 For none of those I first invited will get even the smallest taste of my banquet.’”

Luke 14:16, 18, 24 (NLT)

“Excuses are monuments of nothingness. They build bridges to nowhere. Those who use these tools of incompetence, seldom become anything but nothing at all.”  ~Author Unknown

There is nothing worse than putting together a big event that you are excited about and the people you really wanted to come don’t show up. To add insult to injury, they give excuses to cover up the fact that they just didn’t want to come. People make time for what’s important to them.

Jesus has issued an invitation to us for us to join him at his table. It should be an honor to get this invitation, but when we are self-absorbed, an invitation from Jesus can seem like an interruption. There is always something else we could be doing. But it’s not often that Jesus sends a personal invitation. When he does, don’t make excuses.

  1. I just bought some land. Let me inspect it. Sometimes we let our business get in the way of God’s invitation. God’s work is our work.
  2. I just bought five pair of oxen. Let me try them out. We’d rather spend time trying out what God blessed us with instead of taking time out to spend with the giver!
  3. I just got married. Sometimes our relationships take priority over God’s requests. If our relationship with God is right then the other relationships will be sweeter.

When the invited guests came up with excuses the master invited the least likely people to fill up the banquet hall. God always has somebody to take our place, especially when we keep coming up with excuses.

Dear God,

Whatever you’re doing in this season please don’t do it without me! Thank you for including me on your guest list. Thank you for making a banquet table in the presence of my enemies! Today, I am anticipating an invitation to join you and I wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world!

In Jesus’ Name,
