1 Timothy 6:20-21 “Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness. May God’s grace be with you all.“

There are so many talking heads out there. With the growth of the Internet intelligence has been stunted. Everybody and their mama is an expert on everything. Whether it’s YouTube, Periscope, or blogs, there is somebody out there that claims to know something. Then there is the media! There’s so much spin on the news channel that you don’t know who’s telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Last but not least there are the street prophets and those who are anti-God/church. If you are not careful you can go looking for knowledge and find yourself indoctrinated with foolishness.

Paul tells His spiritual son to guard his heart against such foolishness. How do we guard our hearts?

  1. Be careful who you let have your ear. Some people on their best days could be used by the devil to throw you off track. You have to discern spirits to make sure that it is from God and not the enemy.
  2. Beware of toxic people who are angry with God or the church and their agenda is to turn everybody else away. Misery loves company.
  3. In your pursuit of knowledge get understanding. You must have a clear understanding of scripture before you engage so-called intellectuals. There is such a thing as an educated fool. Much learning has driven them mad. The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Some of the wisest people you meet are children and old people. Children because they are closer to God having just come from heaven and older people because they are making their way back to God. In the middle are those of us that have been exposed to so many mixed messages and we’ve stopped listening to God and have tuned in to foolish chattering on TV, blog sites, and social media. We know so much but understand nothing. Be still and know that he is God!

Make up your mind to turn off the idiot box (TV), pick up your Bible, and go in your closet to pray. God is waiting to enlighten you. Come to him with your heart and mind open. Turn away from foolish chatter disguised as knowledge.

Dear God,

I know too much about you for the talking heads to make me doubt you. To know you is to love you. I haven’t discovered you in books. I’ve experienced you in my life. The cross is foolishness to those who perish but you have taken what the intelligent has labeled as foolish, namely our faith in Jesus, and you have confounded the wise. Don’t let us be tricked into swapping our knowledge of you for worldly knowledge that leads us back to nothing. You are my everything. In you I live- move and have my being. Keep me grounded in you.

In Jesus Name,
